Overview
The main goal of the Graduate Program in Applied Meteorology is providing training for human resources to teach, research and technical assistance activities at master and doctoral levels.
The Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) has offered Master and Doctorate Majors in Applied Meteorology since 1981 and 2002, respectively. The Graduate Program was accredited by the Federal Council of Education (CFE), according to Decision Number 207/83 – Case Number 288/82, ratified by the Brazilian Department of Education and Culture on May 25, 1983 and published in the Federal Official Gazette on May 30, 1983.
In 2015, the Graduate Program, then called Agronomy (Agricultural Meteorology), changed its name to Agronomy (Applied Meteorology), and is evaluated by Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) in the area of Agricultural Science.
Students work on a full-time basis, under the supervision of an advisor. Candidates for the title of “Magister Scientiae” or “Doctor Scientiae” are required to prepare and defend a dissertation / thesis, based on an original research conducted under the supervision of an advisor or an advisory committee.
The Graduate Program was rated 5 by CAPES, in the 2010-2012 triennial period and in the 2013-2016 quadrennium period (the highest rate by CAPES is 7).
Duration
The duration of the course is 24 and 48 months, for the Master and the Doctorate Majors, respectively.
The deadline for completing the stages is controlled by the Graduate Program Coordination through the regular dissemination of the “Deadline for Compliance of Stages”, so that advisors and students are alert for the end of the deadline for completion of the course.
Students who do not defend their dissertation/thesis for up to 30 months (Master’s) and 54 months (Doctorate), after the beginning of the course, will have their academic performance considered deficient and will be disconnected from the Graduate Program, according with article 46, subsection V of the Stricto Sensu Post-Graduation Regiment of UFV.
